What does this excerpt mean?

I think what the quote means is that we rely on things like "color of blood" -> types of violence (the color representing the type i.e. terrorism, murder versus bloodshed to protect or to save) or "salt of tears" -> sadness (the bases of the sadness/the salt) to affect our conscious. But now that the people are blind, the "mirror inwards" represents that they need to look inside themselves, not to be motivated by what they perceive but what they believe in (their innate feelings/morals?)
