Is acne really hereditary?

My mom had severe acne as a kid, and my dad had mild acne. The thing i'm not understanding is, where did the acne come from in the first place? My italian grandmother and great- grandmother didn't have acne as far as i know. None of my old relatives really seemed to have it.
